A blocked nose, sneezing and headache are among the most common reasons people visit an ENT specialist, especially when the weather changes. Some of these problems are caused by allergies, while others are due to inflammation or infection of the sinuses, known as sinusitis.

Because the symptoms overlap, many people take the wrong medicines or use nasal sprays for too long. Understanding the difference helps you get the right treatment, sleep better and avoid repeated infections.

What Is Sinusitis?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces around the nose, cheeks and forehead. When their lining swells due to a cold, allergy or infection, mucus cannot drain properly. This causes facial pressure, a blocked nose and thick discharge.

1. Signs that point to an allergy

Repeated sneezing, itchy eyes and nose, and a clear, watery discharge, often triggered by dust, pollen or pets.

2. Signs that point to sinusitis

Pain or pressure over the cheeks or forehead, thick yellow or green discharge, a reduced sense of smell and symptoms lasting more than ten days, or getting worse after first improving.

Using decongestant nasal sprays for more than a few days can make the blockage worse. Use them only as advised by your doctor.

Healyn Hospitals, ENT

Our ENT specialists examine the nose, sometimes with a small endoscope, and may advise an X-ray or CT scan for long-standing problems. Treatment may include saline nasal rinses, steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines for allergies and antibiotics only when a bacterial infection is likely. Surgery is considered for chronic cases or structural problems.

When to See an ENT Specialist

Book an ENT consultation if your symptoms are frequent, long-lasting or severe, or if you notice:

  • Sinus pain or blocked nose for more than ten days
  • Three or more sinus infections a year
  • Swelling or redness around the eyes
  • Snoring, mouth breathing or poor sleep due to blockage

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sinusitis go away on its own?

Many cases caused by a cold improve within a week or two with rest, fluids and steam. Persistent or severe symptoms need medical care.

Is steam inhalation helpful?

Steam can loosen mucus and ease congestion. Use warm, not boiling, water and be careful with children.

Can allergies be prevented?

Reducing exposure to triggers such as dust and smoke, and regular treatment advised by your doctor, can greatly reduce symptoms.
